Week 1: Techniques learned in the first two classes are for students to practice without worrying about keeping work.

1. Choosing a clay to work with.
2. Throwing a base for attaching coils, creating consistent coils by hand.
3. Multiple attaching and blending techniques for adding coils.
4. Managing thickness consistency and dryness strength while building shapes.

Week 2: Topics covered

1. Drying techniques for multiple day construction and preparation for trimming.
2. Sticking to a planned shape and following through.
3. Shape refinement.
4. Fixing problems or avoiding them all together.

Week 3: Practical application, students should use these last two weeks to produce work using multiple days in between classes taking advantage of the natural drying time for work.

1. Students should bring a plan with scaled drawing then begin building their forms based on what technique best suits the form.

Week 4:

Students should be refining and preparing to trim work if trimming is required. More techniques for surface refinement will be covered.

Thrown Coil is an intermediate-level class - some prior clay experience is required. You must be comfortable centering up to 2 pounds of clay prior to taking class.

This class is happening at our classroom studio - located at 1271 Market Street in Chattanooga, TN.

Find the classroom:The classroom space is behind the Firestone building at the corner of Market and W. 13th Street. Classroom entrance is located on West 13th Street directly across from Urban Stack, while the entrance to the parking lot is on Cowart Street. If our parking lot is full, there is plenty of street parking available on Cowart, West 13th, and Market Street.

SCCA must have at least 4 students to make a class. If 4 students are not enrolled, we will inform you at least two days before the start date.

We do not offer any make-up classes.
