Surface Design with Sara Wiggins

In this course, students will explore different surface design techniques for leatherhard clay. Students will work with slip and underglazes, learning traditional techniques such as sgraffito, mishima, resists and transfers, and slip trailing. Students will also learn how to manipulate the texture of the clay by creating their own bisque stamps. Students will need to be able to create multiple forms during the first week of clay.
Course Outline
Week 1: Create forms (minimum 5), carve Bisque Stamps for future use.
Week 2: Trim pieces, techniques covered: Slip trailing, transfers, resists
Week 3: Techniques covered: sgraffito, mishima, Bisque stamps, applique
Week 4: Glazing
Surface Design is an intermediate-level class - some prior clay experience is required. You must be comfortable using basic clay techniques.
What's included:
- Four 2.5 hour instructional sessions
- Clay provided
- Access to all studio supplies, materials and tools
This class is happening at our classroom studio - located at 1271 Market Street in Chattanooga, TN.
Find the classroom:The classroom space is behind the Firestone building at the corner of Market and W. 13th Street. Classroom entrance is located on West 13th Street directly across from Urban Stack, while the entrance to the parking lot is on Cowart Street. If our parking lot is full, there is plenty of street parking available on Cowart, West 13th, and Market Street.

SCCA must have at least 4 students to make a class. If 4 students are not enrolled, we will inform you at least two days before the start date.
