This 4 week course will introduce artists to the essentials of glaze chemistry and practical glaze formulation. Participants will learn about common glaze components and how to predict glaze surface finishes while gaining hands-on experience in creating, testing, and evaluating glaze recipes.

  • Learn the role of basic raw materials in glaze recipes 

  • Develop an understanding of basic glaze recipe composition

  • Learn how to predict glaze surface finishes, based off of the glaze composition (matte, semi-matte, glossy)

    • We will not be discussing color or color development in this class. 

  • Gain hands-on experience making a glaze from raw materials and how-to follow basic glaze recipes

  • We may explore basic troubleshooting of wet glazes, as needed

Glaze Chemistry is an intermediate-level class - some prior clay experience is required. You must be comfortable with basic handbuilding techniques.

What's included:
- Four 2.5 hour instructional session
- Clay provided
- Access to all studio supplies, materials and tools

This class is happening at our main studio location at 301 E. 11th Street in Chattanooga, TN.

Find the studio:The studio is located in the basement of ArtsBuild at the corner of 11th and King Streets. Enter the glass lobby door facing 11th street and take the elevator down to “B” level. The elevator will remain locked up until 15 minutes prior to class start time.

Parking is available in the lot directly to the right of ArtsBuild. Metered street parking is also available.

SCCA must have at least 4 students to make a class. If 4 students are not enrolled, we will inform you at least two days before the start date.

We do not offer any make-up classes.
